Feeling better (but still no sunshine!)

I managed to sleep and cook so I’m functioning a bit better. But still it’s cloudy here. Checked out the weather and it said it’s getting better tomorrow. And it’s saturday, so I’m going to enjoy the last drop of sunshine! Below you see my view from the window.. (and accidentally there’s my car on the road) (fuck I miss my car)

So, about yesterday, the party was nice, but the club was really average. (I wont even compare with the Athenian nightspots) Of course, we are in a small city, so you definately don’t expect to see luxurious places here. But, although the club was medium, the people were really having fun. Again no comparison with how much “fun” we’re having in Athenian nightclubs. (no fun).

In need of some sunshine

Oh gosh. It’s like the 3rd or 4th day in a row without sunshine and it’s beginning to be a bit depressing. Now I really feel what people (greek people) who live in northern Europe complain about.

Last nights party was sympathetic, although I’m really tired, and I skipped class. I shopped some stuff in order to cook, but I’m really booored and tireeeed. I’ll just spend this day on the couch.

A really long one about everything…

Fffffff… Another long day reaches its end. So I’ll grab my Laptop and write a few words cause when I post when I’m in a hurry I’ll forget again all the stuff I want to write and then after I post I’ll start remembering them one by one.

I arrived here in the 13th of September and it’s currently the 23rd of October so that makes.. how many? 40 days.. Slowly I think I can reach into some first conclusions about the city, the country, the people, the daily life here etc etc. First of all I like to talk with people who live here and foreigners, getting their opinion about daily life. It helps when you want to see if what you feel is common. I did that a lot and here’s where I am so far.

To begin with, and as you’ll have noticed from my previous posts, everything is really stressed here. Surprisingly, the locals say that Southern France is the most relaxed part and blabla, but I suppose that’s because they haven’t lived in Greece yet :-)
Hm, I don’t know if the cause of my stressful, active daily program is France or just the fact that I’m dealing with more stuff here. For example, in the Greek university, I rarely attended lectures.(no point) Here, it’s “obligatory”, not only in the sense that they keep track of who’s absent or not asking pre-notification of absences, but also because the lectures actually have a meaning. You work with your group for various projects, the lectures are (usually) (but not always) interesting, etc etc. So there go 6 hours of my daily timetable, 09:00 till 16:15. Read Full Story » »

I miss you

And I mean all of you. Friends, almost friends, family, home…

I’m still waiting for my internet connection until maybe next week, so I have no means to contact anyone. My mobile can’t call mobiles outside France for some reason I don’t know..

Waiting for your emails.. and going to eat my tune-rise..

All around the world

Found some time to post before the lesson starts. (actually, it has already started, but i’m late as usual, so i’ll wait until the break at 10:30) Fortunately, I’m not that sick anymore, except the sneezing and the coughing. I managed to get a friend of the owner of my apart. to come in and solve some issues, so the place is looking a lot better. I got rid of an old table and I’ll replace it with a new IKEA one. I also got rid of the old bed dammit. And now i’ll have to assembly the new one.

Probably I’m doing my first visit to Marseille today. It’s an apartmenet-party-something with 3-4 dj’s. Let’s see. I really need a have a drink (or two). That will probably take away the pressure of the last week(s).

The vacations week starts at 27/10 and i’m thinking about going to Barcelona to visit good friend Eleni! Yee!

Moving in

The moment I’m writing this, I’m probably having a mild fever, so I’ll try to do my best.

This week was c-r-a-z-y. I moved in Tuesday, and the first days in the apartment were not at all easy. To begin with, the apartment was really (really) dirty, and there are (still) things that need to be fixed. Curtains, some small furniture in the bathroom, hangers, fix the IKEA bed I bought. But let’s take things from the beginning.

Tuesday I got my stuff and suitcases and got into the bus. Thank god my Greek friend was at the bus stop and helped me move the 3 large suitcases, while also letting me leave them at her place while I went to sign the contract for the apartment and all. That’s true Greek spirit. (that’s what I like about us greeks anyway, although other people and colleagues also offered to help)

The real-estate agency denied to clean the apartment before I move in, (taking advantage of the fact that I really needed to move). Anyway, Wednesday was a no-courses day, so I had the opportunity to visit IKEA with my Tunisian friend, and get some basic stuff (that I could transport with the bus). I also got a first clue of how the IKEA system works, because the next day, Thursday, a French friend offered to drive me to IKEA to buy (and maybe transport) the rest stuff I needed, like a new bed.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t fit the bed to the car, so I paid for a delivery. I also got a small furniture (MALM) to place beside the bed (also MALM), some kitchen stuff, some bedroom stuff. Anyway, IKEA is a cool place, no news about that, but it’s a bit large for me. I hate big open spaces and I was really tired anyway, so I couldn’t enjoy the whole procedure.

And then came the cleaning day. After all I realized I have a thing with cleaning. I can’t stand living in a dirty apart. Anyway, right now the place is shining. Yuha.

Between all that, I tried to get myself an internet connection. That was something. And why? Because I had to face French services. Again. Oh gosh. So Friday, I decided to skip the morning lessons and go to France telecom. I thought, well, I’ll go at 09:00 and I’ll be done maximum 10:00 so I’ll also have the time to go to the supermarket and buy some stuff. NOP. France telecom (like most of the shops) opens at 10:00. Yes. TEN O CLOCK. Imagine that. At 10:00 already there were 10 people waiting outside. The French were really pissed off and I had small conversations with some of them, who told me that “in a global market, we can’t continue like this in France.” Damn right you can’t!

The opening/closing hours of the shops are pretty much the big problem here. Firstly, every shop has a different timetable. Some supermarkets close at 19:00, some at 19:30, and some at 20:00. Go figure.

And then, when you finally get your way INTO the shops, you have to face the second problem: French employees. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. I have to wait for 30’, 40’ or even 1h to get an employee to help me. And most of the employees can answer only if the question is between the questions they learned at their traning. (what training?) It’s like they have a list of 100 things they know by heart. If you ask something SLIGHTLY different they do one of the following things: 1) they answer to a different question. 2) they say that it’s not their responsibility and you have to go to another service/shop/office 3) they give a wrong answer. I think I miss the times I visited a similar shop in Athens, when 2 employees asked me immediately what I need. And although the Greek employees are not better-trained, there is a small possibility you run into some smarter guy who’ll help you get the job done.

Anyway, after 2 visits to France Telecom, I managed to get myself a new ORANGE 18Mb connection + digital TV + infinite calls for 35E/m. Not bad. They told me it will be active in 10 days.(bullshit) I hope cause I’m with no access since Tuesday and it s u c k s. Not I have that much time to surf anyway, but when you get back home after a tiring day, and you’re not in the mood to go out, and the French TV is playing Us Series and Films with no subtitles, with French actors talking over them (… s u c k s B I G …) , you have to do something.

And, Saturday early morning, I woke up with a mild temperature, feeling cold and all. I wasn’t that surprised. That week was the most difficult week since I got here, considering I had to 1) follow the lessons lasting from 09:00 to 16:00, and moving at the same time, and then fixing the place, and trying to find something to eat, supermarket, wash, organized, be on time in the different dates with the real-estate agent, organized the schoolwork. So for 5 consecutive days, I woke up at 08:00, returned back at 20:00, worked at the apart until 23:00, and then sleeping on the couch while watching TV. ( the new bed will be such a luxury after all these nights sleeping in crappy beds or couches )

Damn, I realize my english are getting crappier and crappier here. (I suppose that’s because I rarely speak or think English around here. I met many internationals from various countries in the uni. but until now we don’t hang out that much. I think I’ll organize an international meeting when I get myself some peace of mind). Oh, about that, internationalism is all over my small group of new friends. Tunisia, Cameroon, Madagascar and of course France. Cool.

My second homesickness attack happened sometime around Thursday. What I miss is someone calling me “malaka”, telling me “kalimera”. I’m telling you, word up, if I run into someone and he suddenly shouts “RE MALAKA!!!” I’ll just go and give him/her a big hug. What I also miss, is greek yogurt and greek milk. The milk really sucks here. Not much variety in dairy. Or maybe I should stop shopping at ED ( = DIA ). Some FETA also. And tzatziki. And a big huge salad with extra olive oil and RIGANI. I’ll make the first person who’ll visit (if i manage to get some free time) to bring me some.

I met a 2nd Greek doing ERASMUS in Aix! Cool!!

got 2 go..

Weekend & apartment

This week passed so fast I didn’t even notice it. But I have news: Apartment found! yep yep

Unfortunately, due to security reasons, I can’t point you to the exact building, but it’s enough to say that the building shows into the satellite photo above. You can clearly see the main square, La Rotonde. So, I’m like 2 minutes walk from the main square yeeee. I was soooo lucky, after hours and hours of walking, to run into this agency, and this very kind employee there, who arrange me for a visit to the apart. immediately, and of course I told her I want it immediately. It has nothing to do with the old-traditional ancient city centre, it’s mostly to the modern side, but you know what, that’s what I’ve been looking for from the start I think. The traditional style is really nice to watch, but not at all practical to live in.

Monday will be the moving day. After that, maybe next weekend, or sooner, I’ll have to pay a visit to the IKEA nearby and buy some new furniture to substitute some existent ones. I’ll have to call for help from the classmates for that, moving beds with the bus won’t be a piece of cake.

Now, concerning the blog, lately my spare time is getting less and less so my blog posts are a bit sloppy. I hate that. I think now that everything is in place, there are not much to say. Feels like the blog made it’s circle. Maybe I’ll quit posting, or post less frequently. Don’t know. What do you think?

homesick?

Last days have been kindda strange. I haven’t actually much time to think about things, except maybe my bus rides, but yesterday was a bit tough. I actually skipped class cause I need to end the apartment issue once and for all, and had to walk all over the city from 09 to 20:00.. That must be a personal record.

Anyway, with some success -we’ll see about that tomorrow and the day after-, I returned back home, while having a migrane episode. It actually had been quite some time since I last had one, and it pretty much sucked. And cause I still live in the temporary residence, in the middle of nowhere, It felt kindda lonely. So, that was my first being sick&alone experience.

Gladly, after 4-5 hours I started to feel better, feel asleep, and today I woke up feeling better and refreshed. The classes went ok, although having lecture from 09:00 to 16:00 is not exactly that much fun. Things are quite tough if you think it’s a Master’s degree. I think everyone’s -including me- waiting for the practical training to begin. We had the oppotunity to gossip a bit with the other Greek in the uni, cool.

In the afternoon, I had a sudden need to learn what’s going on back home. So, I watched the most popular greek tv news online. I suppose it’s a mini-homesickness, but I don’t worry. Although I’m having a hard time with the apartment and all, I still enjoy every second of the experience here, and I have absolutely no doubt or need to return back. On the contrary, I’m eager to organize my first trips. Octoberfest in Munich was a thought, but it ends this Sunday, and still I haven’t settled in. First trip will probably be to Paris to see Yiota, and then Brussels to Panos. November will be Barcelona and maybe Italy, if there’s time.

Tomorrow is our no-courses day, and I’ll head to the town, see an apartment, and maybe do some shopping or hang out with friends who happen to be there. The good thing is that once you’re in town, everyone and everything is really a 10 minute walk-maximum-! That’s why everyone wants to be near the city centre. Personally, if I had my car here, I’d have no problem living 10 or 20′ outside the city. I’m actually thinking of driving with my car here around christmas. Fuck, I hate driving for like 10hours, but it’s worth it. That will depend on where I’ll make my practical training (actually Apprentiship). I’ve been said from many French people that most of the good opportunities are in Marseille and Paris, so maybe I’ll be moving again at May…(this year i think i’m breaking all personal records)

Oh, last thing, I shouldn’t forget. Although I have been here for like half a month, and many things start to be familiar, I still sometimes look around and make sure I am actually..here. Thoughts like “wtf.am i in France?is this happening?am i dreaming or something?” And i’m not exaggerating at all, I really hits me sometimes. And it’s neither bad or good. It just.. happens.

fuck.00:15… i should heading towards my…chateau..! babai! Bisous! a bientot! au revoir! a toute a l heure! besos! ciao!
